History of Baswood
Baswood offers innovative and sustainable technology-based solutions to wastewater and biosolids treatment for a wide range of industrial and municipal markets. Baswood was founded in 2004 by microbiologist and inventor, Paul Baskis, to commercialize patented technologies for biological waste treatment that was developed to replicate the natural processes for breaking down organic materials that are found in riverine environments.
Since our initial application in the municipal market at Glasgow, Kentucky, Baswood's state-of-the-art technology has proven effective in treating municipal, agricultural, and industrial waste streams with a cost advantage over baseline technologies.
Dan SimonChief Executive Officer, Board Member
Dan joined Baswood in 2018 and delivers over 25 years of engineering, development, operations, and leadership experience in the water, energy, manufacturing, and food industries. Dan started his career as a water and energy management engineer at Ecolab, Inc. and NCH Corporation, with progressive roles living and working in the USA, Japan, and Thailand. Dan then served the next five years with TIC/Kiewit Construction developing, financing, building, and operating over $5 billion in industrial process and infrastructure assets. Since 2004, Dan has been a passionate entrepreneur, CEO, and Board Member to multiple public and private sustainable technology companies including taking one public and growing it from inception to over $650 M in annual sales. Most recently, Dan was leading a boutique advisory firm he founded, serving global family offices, private equity funds, and public investment companies.
Ashwin GulatiSVP Business and Corporate Development
After consulting with Baswood, Ashwin joined the company in January 2019 in his current role. He brings 25+ years of experience in executive leadership, management, sales, marketing, and international business development. Before Baswood, Ashwin was President and CEO of Spiral Water Industries, helping lead the advanced water filtration company from startup to award-winning international recognition. Ashwin started his career driving direct and channel sales in Europe and the U.S. for Dun & Bradstreet Software. As founder of Match Point Ventures, Ashwin advised technology companies engaged in turnaround strategies and new ventures. He holds a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College, with a dual degree in economics and mathematics.
Dr. Kai ZhangPrincipal Process Engineer
Kai received his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. His expertise is in biological wastewater treatment, process R&D, and modeling. Specifically, Kai has extensive process design experience in conventional activated sludge, nutrient removal, membrane bioreactors, various anaerobic reactors, and the integration of different unit processes into a solution suitable for end-users. Kai has worked with clients in refineries, chemical manufacturers, food and beverage producers, and municipalities. In his spare time, Kai enjoys running, reading, and photography.
Phani PeddiSenior Process Engineer
Phani Peddi joined Baswood in 2017 with eight years of experience in water treatment process design, pilot scale testing, commissioning and plant operations. He worked on several wastewater and residuals related projects for different industries including municipal, manufacturing, fossil fuel fired power plants, mining, and food & beverage. Phani graduated with a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Texas A&M University. His areas of expertise include primary, secondary and polishing stages of water treatment, biological sludge treatment, solids dewatering, conceptual process design and treatment plant operations.
Baswood BioViper™ Wastewater Pretreatment System Begins Operations at Dr Pepper Snapple Group Bottling PlantProcess Wastewater Solution Supports Sustainability, Reduces Cost
HOUSTON, March 5, 2013 – Baswood Corporation, a provider of advanced wastewater treatment systems, today announced the start of full-scale operations of its BioViper™ biological pretreatment system at the Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYSE:DPS) Houston bottling plant. Using Baswood's patented technologies, the BioViper™ delivers an energy-efficient pretreatment solution that significantly lowers the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the bottling plant's facility's effluent while supporting DPS's environmental sustainability goals.
With digestion rates of 75 to 90 percent, the Baswood system provides a reduction in the plant's organic loading, which allows DPS to minimize its burden on the City of Houston wastewater treatment operations and increases the city's capacity to treat wastewater from other industrial customers.
The proprietary BioViper™ system requires 40 percent less energy to operate than traditional digestion systems and 25 percent less energy than other emerging technologies. In addition to a smaller carbon footprint, the BioViper™ occupies a small physical footprint, which enabled the pretreatment facility to be built within the existing DPS property boundaries. The modular and scalable system can expand if additional capacity is required for the plant's bottling operations.

The BioViper™ is based on the patented Aerobic/Anaerobic Integrated Media System (AIMS), which maximizes biological treatment efficiency utilizing Baswood's Dry Cycle Aerobic/Anaerobic Digestion (DCAD) technology. As wastewater passes through distinct treatment zones within the system, sequential treatment results in accelerated digestion of organic wastes, virtually odor free. The BioViper™achieves treatment goals with a reduced hydraulic retention and increased solids retention, resulting in lower horsepower demands; is internally self-buffering, reducing the need for costly chemicals; and uses Baswood's proprietary control system, requiring minimal operator oversight.
The Baswood technology was developed and patented by Paul Baskis, a microbiologist and inventor, who studied rivers and saw how bacteria worked in different aeration environments.
Based on these studies, Mr. Baskis designed an innovative approach to wastewater treatment that replicated the efficient and effective processes that occur in a natural environment.
Baswood's chairman of the board, actor Edward Norton, is the United Nations Ambassador for Biodiversity, a trustee of Conservation International and member of the TEEB Advisory Council and a long-time advocate for sustainable technologies. Norton has a long-standing interest in efficient, modular wastewater treatment solutions from his work in the developing world and was a founding investor in Baswood in 2004. He has been on the Board since 2007 and became chairman in 2008.
